name 4 types of epithelial tissues
Answers
Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue is a single or many layers of cell. It consists of a free surface and a basement membrane. The basement membrane lies on a non cellular layer and underneath lies the connective tissue. The free surface is either present externally or internally, which provides support and protection
Epithelial tissue is classified into the following:
Squamous Epithelium
- Cells are flattened and polygonal in shape
- They have a nucleus present in the centre
- It is called as Pavement Membrane
- Urethra of males and females
Cuboidal Epithelium
- Cells are cuboidal in shape
- The nucleus lies in the periphery
- Present in kidney tubules and bronchioles
- There are also known as brush border epithelium due to the fact that the free surface of the tissue may contain cilia
Columnar Epithelium
- The cells are long and slender
- The nucleus may be circular or spherical in shape
- Stomach and small intestine
Ciliated Epithelium
- Cuboidal or Columnar cells bearing cilia on their membrane
- Oviduct of the female reproductive system
Glandular Epithelium
- The epithelial tissue surrounding glands
- There may be a cell,a tissue or an organ functioning as gland
- Testes of male reproductive system
Psedostratified Epithelium
- Cells are columnar
- They are single layered but appear as if they are multilayered tissue
- Long cells have spherical nucleus while small cells have oval nucleus
Answer:
Types of Epithelial tissue:
It is classified into:
1. Simple epithelium:
Epithelial tissue which is only one cell thick is known as simple epithelium.
It is further classified into:
a. Simple Squamous Epithelium
b. Simple Columnar Epithelium
c. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
d. Simple Ciliated Epithelium
e. Simple Glandular Epithelium
2. Compound or Stratified epithelium:
Epithelium composed of several layers is called compound epithelium or stratified epithelium.
