Cell is a basic unit of our life, which also helps our food to be transferred in whole body with help of some structures present in our Body. The shapes of cell differ not only in different organism but also in the different organs of the same organism. These differences in shapes are due to their location and function in a tissue. For instance, nerve cell has to transmit nerve impulse to organs located in different parts of the body. Hence, they poses a long fibre - like structure. There our variety in the shape of cells, there are seven types of cell present in human body , they are as follows :

  • Nerve cell
  • Liver cell
  • Chlamydomonas
  • Amoeba
  • Red blood cell
  • Smooth muscle cell
  • Fat cell

Cell vary considerable in their size. The smallest cell, named as PPLO, also called as mycoplasma is about 0.1 micron (which is denoted as'μ') in diameter (1μ = 10^-6m). The ostrich egg, considered to be the largest cell, which is nearly 170 mm in diameter. The hen's egg also represent a single cell ; it is big enough to be seen with the unaided eyes.

The (approximate) sizes, of some of the plants and animal cell, are given here :

1.) Amoeba = 1000 μ

2.) Hen's egg = 60 mm

3.) Ostrich egg = 170 mm

4.) Green alga, Chara = 10 cm

The (approximate) sizes, of some cells of human body, are given here :

1.) Red blood cell (RBCs) = 9μm

2.) Liver cell = 20 μm

3.) Human ovum = 01 mm or 100μm

4.) Nerve cell = (about to) 1m

NOTE : 1μm = 10^-6 metres = 10^-3 millimetres
