(a). Zinc spar or Smithsonite is a carbonate ore of zinc . Its chemical formula is ZnCO_{3} .

(b). Zinc carbonate ( ZnCO_{3} ) is converted into Zinc oxide ( ZnO ) by the process of calcination . The chemical equation is -

                       ZnCO₃ (s) → ZnO (s) + CO₂ (g)

(c). Zinc ( Zn ) can be obtained from Zinc oxide ( ZnO ) by the process of Roasting ( reduction by Carbon ) . The chemical equation is -

                       2 ZnO (s) + C → 2 Zn + CO_{2} (g)
