Paper strips coated with cobalt chloride chemical are used to test the transpiration rate. The strips are placed on either side of leaf and the rate of transpiration is observed by the change in color found on the cobalt chloride strips. These strips appears blue in color when they are in anhydrated form but when transpiration occur on either side of leaf,  the color will change from blue to red.
