Most plant diseases are caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses. These microorganisms may reduce crop yield and, at times, cause total destruction of the crops. The Irish Famine in 1740-41 was caused because of complete destruction of the potato crop due to the disease, Tate blight; caused by a fungus
