You must have observed some plants with wrinkled leaves, or plants and trees having an abnormal branching pattern or having abnormal fruits. These plants may have been affected by a pathogen. Most plant diseases are caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses. These microorganisms may reduce crop yield and, at times, cause total destruction of the crops. The Irish Famine in 1740-41 was caused because of complete destruction of the potato crop due to the disease, Tate blight; caused by a fungus

The following table gives Information about some common plant diseases that are caused by different microorganisms.

VIRUS - Tobacco mosaic virus

Symptoms - (appearance of uneven spots & discoloration on the leaves )

BACTERIA - Citrus canker

Symptoms - ( lesions on leaves , stems and fruits , with raised brown water soaked margins )

FUNGUS - Rust of wheat

symptoms - ( Smut balls in grains that become greenish black ; then burst and infect other grains )

FUNGUS - Smut of Rice

symptoms - ( Smut balls in rice grains that become greenish black ; then burst and infect other grains )

FUNGUS - Red rot of sugarcane

symptoms - ( the infected stems have a dull red colour interrupted by occasional whitish patches across the stalk , and / or elongated red lesions on the midribs of leaves )
