The French Revolution was a key event in modern European history. The causes of the French Revolution were several the monarchy's severe debt problems, poor harvests,  high taxes, & the influence of new political ideas

Explanation:

Fall of Bastille

  • The citizens (a angry mob) who took part in the French Revolution marched to Bastille on the 14th of July 1789, a mediaeval fortress in East Paris, which mostly housed political prisoners.
  • It was seen as a sign of the much hated tyranny of Louis for several people in France. Parisians, depressed, unemployed, and hungry, saw it as a place to exchange their grievances. The "Bastille Commander", "Marquis de Launay", and his troops had fought for several hours until they surrendered to the mob.

March on Versailles

  • Several people in Paris and elsewhere in France became poor, homeless and disappointed. The huge crowd, mostly female demonstrators, marched from Paris to Versailles Palace in October, persuaded that the royal family and the nobles lived there in comfort, ignoring the suffering of the French people.
  • They invaded the quarters of Queen Marie Antoinette, who was extremely disapproved by the citizens. The crowd had demanded for bread & wished the King and his family to "be with the peasants" back in Paris. Louis accepted his demands & agreed to go to Paris with the crowd.

Flight to Varennes

  • The National Assembly collaborated on a draught constitution for France. After much debate, the representatives of the Legislature voted to limit the authority of the king. The King had veto authority, however his veto was reversed by the National Assembly.
  • Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were horrified by these limitations. They looked like hostages at the Tuileries Palace in Paris. Finally , in order to be returned to the thrones as absolute monarchs, they agreed to leave France to seek refuge in Austria.

Dissolution of the National Assembly

  • Finally, on September 30, 1791, the long-awaited constitution came into effect. France was proclaimed a constitutional monarchy when a separate political body called the Legislative Assembly has been abolished and replaced by the National Assembly.
  • Since it was agreed earlier that the presidents of the National Assembly could not hold a seat in the existing Parliament, no new Member of the National Assembly was elected to the new legislative body. The consequence was a lack of useful political expertise for everyone. It comprised a number of political parties, from militant republicans to liberal royalists .
