Potential energy is the energy stored in a body on account of its position

Its formula is mgh where m is the mass of the object, g is the gravitational force and h is the height of the object from the surface of the earth.

A body possesses this energy when it is not in motion. When it is in motion, the potential energy gets converted to kinetic energy

For example, the water of mass 50 litres stored in a tank on the terrace of a building at a height of 19.6 meters possesses Potential energy of mgh=

19.6 \times 9.8 \times 50 = 980

Where 9.8 is the gravitational force exerted by earth.
