A religious movement which was hostile to the western presence in Vietnam was the Hao Hao known otherwise as Vietnamese Buddhist religious movement which initially began with the intention of giving the French and the subsequent Japanese occupants of Vietnam a hard time.
Post the Second World War, Hao Hao continued opposing first the French Colonists and later on Ngo Dinh Diem’s Government backed by the US.
