One of the main differences between the structures of triglycerides and phospholipids is in the making of their backbones. The number of fatty acids in the backbones of both the structures is different.

What are triglycerides and phospholipids?

  • Triglycerides and phospholipids can be described as a kind of lipids which are found naturally on the Earth.
  • As they belong to the same group, hence there structures have a very little difference between them.
  • The difference between structures of triglycerides and phospholipids is that a phospholipid has its backbone made up of two fatty acids.
  • On the other hand, a triglyceride has its backbone made up of three fatty acids.
  • However, the backbone of both the atoms is also made up of glycerol which is similar in both the atoms.
  • Triglycerides are the most common type of glycerides to be found in our food as well as our bodies.

Answer:  A  structural difference between triglycerides and phospholipids is - A triglycerides consists of three fatty acid molecules. But in phospholipids one of these fatty acid molecule is substituted with a phosphate molecules.

Explanation:

The triglycerides are made up of a glycerol and three fatty acids while in the structure of phospholipids one of the fatty acids are replaced by the one phosphate group and there is remaining two fatty acids.. so in other words triglycerides are the precursor of phospholipids.

Phospholipids are amphipathic in nature due to the presence of organic phosphate zwitterion whereas triglycerides are completely hydrophobic in nature so they   are insoluble in water.

triglycerides serves as a major stored energy source of body and phospholipids are the major constituents of the lipid bilayer in the membrane.

Phospholipids are the most abundant lipids found in the biological membranes are they are of two types -

  • Glycerol based Phosphoglycerides
  • Sphingosine based Sphingophospholipids.
