The Instrument is a MAGNETIC COMPASS.

Working:

The compass has a CHARGED, TWO-SIDED NEEDLE inside it which is MAGNETIZED. This needle has 2 ends: 1 red and 1 white in most of the compasses. The RED END signifies NORTH DIRECTION whereas, the WHITE END signifies SOUTH DIRECTION.

Note: The compass should be horizontal in direction and parallel to the ground.

Whenever we hold the compass in the described manner in any direction, it will point towards the NORTH with the RED END of the 2-sided needle.

This is because the needle is MAGNETIZED and gets attracted towards the MAGNETIC RADIATION by the NORTHERN PART of Earth or NORTH POLE.

As these magnetic radiations are positive in MAGNETIC CHARGE and the needle is negatively MAGNETIZED, thus is gets attracted in that direction and point towards NORTH with it's RED colored side.

FYI Note: Words in BOLD are important in this answer, please don't ignore.
