Feudal dues were extracted from the peasants. The Church too extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants, and finally, all members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state. These included a direct tax, called taille, and a number of indirect taxes which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone.

Hope this helps you out! x

Heya!!

Here is your answer -

  • Taille was a direct property tax for the peasants based on how much land held and paid to the state.
  • Indirect taxes imposed on salt and tobacco many other items used every day.
  • The laws during the ancient regime in France restricted toward the third estate.
  • The third estate paid all the taxes so that the Empire could rule and protects its people in a better way.
