The Union List is the largest of the three lists. It records 97 subjects on which the Union Parliament can establish laws. The principal subjects of the Union List are:  War and Peace, Atomic Energy, Citizenship Defense, Foreign Affairs, Currency and Coinage, Navigation and Shipping,  National Resources, Railways, Post and Telegraph,  Foreign Trade, Inter-State Trade and Commerce, Banking, Insurance, National Highways.

State list has 66 Subjects. The main subjects of the State List are hospitals and dispensaries,  public health, and sanitation, public order, police, state court fees, prisons,  intoxicating liquors, relief of disabled local government, pilgrimages within India, and unemployable, libraries, communications, agriculture, animal husbandry.

The actual strength of the Concurrent List is 52 as five more insertions were interpolated by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment. The main subjects listed in this list are criminal law, bankruptcy, and insolvency, trust and trustees, administration of justice, evidence, criminal procedure, contract, actionable wrongs,  preventive detention for reasons concerned with the security of the state, marriage, and divorce, transfer of property other than agricultural land and oaths
