Name any four animals living in Polar Regions and mention their adaptations briefly
Answers
Animals living in polar region are polar bear, artic fox, penguin, and artic seals
Polar bear: Polar bear have thick layer of fur and are fat, which helps them to prevent the coldness. Also they have a coating around skin, which is greasy, which helps to shed water from body.
Artic fox: They are white in colour and have thick fur and skin which helps them to survive the cold habitat. Their tails are fluffy which is also for survival. Their hearing capacity is far better than humans.
Penguin: Penguin also have thick skin which helps to keep them warm. They have fatty layer under skin which gives protection from cold. The webbed feet and the pair of wings are helpful in swimming.
Artic seals: Thick layer of blubber under the skin of seal helps them to protect from cold, and also are good source to conserve food.. Some seals have thick fur also to insulate cold.
ORGANISMS IN POLAR REGIONS -
- In polar regions, temperature always remains at its extreme up to -37 degrees celsius.
- In order to survive harsh cold conditions, animals develop specialized features such as -
1. POLAR BEAR
- Presence of two-layer of fur on the body to prevent heat loss.
- A layer of fat beneath the skin provides insulation.
- Strong sense of smell to catch their prey.
- Ability to stay underwater and remain physically active for the production of the necessary heat in the body.
2. ARTIC WHALES -
- Large body size provides a low surface ratio to volume ratio helps in the retention of the metabolic heat.
- Presence of baleen plates in the mouth functioning as teeth.
- The Body contains a high concentration of myoglobin.
3. ANTARCTIC KRILL
- In cold winters, is found under ice feeding on algae.
- Can starve for up to 200 days by processing energy from the reserved food in the body.
- Uses filtering net or baskets as limbs to capture phytoplanktons.
4. ARCTIC FOXES
- Round compact body to prevent heat loss.
- The presence of fur on paws allows the animal to walk on ice.
- The thick layer of body fat for insulation and food storage.
- A Keen sense of hearing helps them locate their prey.
