Indians were against the draconian style of expansion that the east India Company advocated. Indians were of the view that the company wanted to Impose Christianity on the Indian people.

 Company took heavy taxes from the locals and it also took away the land of the jagirdars causing resentment among the Indian population. The afghan war of 1842 angered the sepoys because many of them were killed due to the inept administration of the British generals.
