Four communities in India practicing transhumance are Gujjars of the Himalayan region, Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir, Gaddis of Himachal, and Monks in the Ladakh region.

Explanation:

The Gujjars of the Himalayan region

  • They are pastoral nomads. They are hard-working. They tend to move to the higher alpine region during summer days in order to collect good pastures and earn their livelihoods.
  • They usually move in groups popularly known as kafila. By the onset of winter, they move to lower plains.

Bakarwals

  • They are shepherds and goatherds. They occupy a large area in the Pir panjal range. They are extremely hardworking. They tend to move to high range mountain into the lush meadows in summer where they gaze their cattle.
  • They are always followed by an ample number of sheep goats and accompanied by dogs.

Gaddis

  • They are semi-nomadic tribes. In summer they tend to move to higher altitudes while in the winter they reach the foothills of Kangra. They usually have two kinds of houses. They are engaged in agricultural activities and wool weaving.

Monks

  • They lead a simple yet hard life style. They follow transhumance to a large extend.
