The three methods used for separating a solid from other solid are :-

• Handpicking :- In this method impurities present in mixtures of different colours, shapes and sizes are separated by hands. example:- separation of stones and pebbles, husk from the wheat, rice and pulses.

• Sieving :- In this methos the small sized impurities are separated from the bigger one by passing them through a sieve. A sieve is a mash or a net. example:- separation of stones, small pebbles from sand or wheat flour.

• Winnowing :- This method involves the separation of lighter constituents of a mixture from the heavier ones with the help of wind by using winnowing fan. example:- separation of husk (lighter particles) from the wheat grains or rice (heavier particles).
