The northern plain is split widely into three sections.
- Punjab plains: The western part of Northern plains is called the Punjab plains. The river Indus and its tributaries are responsible for forming it.
- The Ganga plain: River Ganga is responsible for these plains and they are covering the states of North India, Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The gangetic plains are divided into upper region, middle region and the delta region.
- Brahmaputra Valley: The valley of Brahmaputra lies in Assam in the East.
