Answer:
iron smelting was extremely common in India before the British conquest. In Bihar and Central India, almost every district had smelters that is used local deposits of old to produce iron to make implements and tools of daily use. Indians had also perfected the art of making a steel from iron. Indian steel was known all over the world and used for making weapons.
like the craft of Indian Textiles, the craft of iron smelting also declined with the British conquest of India.
_______________ again, there were several factors responsible for this decline :-
- a series of British forest laws passed by the mid 19th century in the form of forest act restricted access to forest areas. Under these conditions, the iron smelters could not continue with their occupation for long. Many gave up their craft and looked for other means of livelihood.
- the demand for iron produced by local indigenous smelters also declined because of tough competition from British still. In fact, the large demand of iron and steel required for the construction of Railways in India was made by importing iron and steel from England.
