Answer: Dalits are constitutionally rectified as SC, Mahatma Gandhi coined another term 'Harijan' for them which meant 'Children of God'. Today's Dalits/SC were part of Sudhra varna. Due to efforts of British government many castes like Kurmi, Jat, Sonar, Lohar were able to uplift themselves by farming rights given to them and extra efforts from British government in helping to setup small self-employed trades. However the fruits were not able to reach to the more lower strata thus it created gap between Sudhra castes also i.e Upper Sudhra and lower Sudhra. The lower Sudhras Chamars, vankars, bhangi, Dhobi etc. were later came to known as Dalits and where given equality measures such as positive representation in jobs and education through Affirmative actions by 1950. Currently their are more than 1100 castes in India listed as SC.

Schedule caste follows Hinduism as they were part of Varna system but due to influence of Ambedkar many portion has adopted Buddhism.

Schedule Tribe

Adivasi is the term which is often used to describe tribals. Adivasi is sanskrit word which means Adi- first Vasi- residents, first residents of motherland. Tribals were never part of any varna system. In fact Tribals existed even before any religion came into existence. India has the largest population of Indigenous tribal population than any other nation in world. Tribals have their own unique culture and tradition. Around 200~300 tribes still have their own dialect and speaks their own language which is still unknown to outer world. Even Supreme court passed an judgment in 2011 that Schedule Tribe are the community which is true native of India it means that Adivasi were the first people to inhabit this land. The rest of all communities came later and are immigrants.
