Nationalism arose because of foreign domination. This helped to strengthen the bond between people that led the way to create nationalism.

1. There was no proper treatment and rules were unequal. Businessmen and others had high support while the peasants continued to suffer.

2. Rise of Indian capital was slow which led Indians to suffer in the hands of the British.

Scholars have suggested that the early nationalists had two shortcomings and they were criticised for using these two methods that carried their agitation.

They used prayers and petitions to the government as one method which would never have resulted in independence.  

They were also unsuccessful in drawing and gathering more masses into the national movement. The only people influenced were the few educated urban Indians.
