Composition. Saliva is composed of a variety of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and phosphates. Also found in saliva are immunoglobulins, proteins, enzymes, mucins, and nitrogenous products, such as urea and ammonia.

Function of the saliva
Chemical digestion: breaks down starch by the function of “salivary amylase”Helps chewing and swallowing.Lubricating effect: moisturizes the inside of the mouth and creates smoother speech.Solvent effect: dissolves food and allows the tongue to taste food.

saliva contains ptaylin enzyme i.e amylase which digest starch and covert it into maltose-- a simple carbohydrate.
Another function of it is to make the food easy to swallow and to avoid friction.
salivary amylase also have some antiseptic effect that is the reason why any wound inside our mouth heals more frequently than on our skin. its best example be dogs whose saliva works as a best antiseptic.
