It is indeed a very good question. Ashoka’s rock edicts or stone inscriptions were very useful to prove ancientness of many languages. It helped to prove that Kannada as a language was existing in BC also. His edicts were mainly in Prakrit, but his inscriptions which were done in Kannada land had Kannada words in between Prakrit.
