Towns and cities of developed and developing countries reflect marked differences in planning and development. While most cities in developing countries are planned, most developing country urban settlements have traditionally formed in irregular fashion.  

• Town: The concept of ‘town’ is understood in regard to ‘village’. Population size is not the only criterion. Functional contrasts between villages and towns is not always clear-cut; however specific functions such as, retail, wholesale trade, professional services, and manufacturing, exist in towns
• City: A town can be called a city that has outperformed its local or regional competitors. Cities are significantly larger than towns and have more economic functions. We seem to have transportation hubs, national bureaus, and major financial institutions.  
• Conurbation: Invented by Patrick Geddes in the year 1915, it refers to a large area of urban development which was the result of merging of originally separate cities/towns. Manchester, Tokyo, Chicago, and Greater London are a few examples.  
• Megalopolis: Popularized by Jean Gottman in the year 1957 signifies ‘super- metropolitan’ region out spreading, as a combination of conurbations. The urban landscape that stretches from 'Boston in the north-south of Washington' in the US is an example of a 'megalopolis'.
