Answer-

Arthropoda is the largest phylum

Features-

  • Triploblastic, bilaterally, symmetical and metamerically segmented animals.
  • Body segments are grouped into two regions - Cephalothorax (head and thorax together) and abdomen, or three regions - head, thorax and abdomen. Anterior part of body forms a distinct head , bearing sense organs and brain.
  • Exoskeleton of cuticle, containing protein, lipid, chitin, and often calcium carbonate is secreted by underlying epidermis and shed (moulted) at intervals.
  • They have complex muscular system, with endoskeleton for attachment, striated muscles for rapid actions and smooth muscles for visceral organs. cilia are absent.
  • Each body segment (somite) usually bears paired lateral and jointed legs or appendages.
  • Body cavity is haemocoel. The coeloms are reduced to the spaces of the genital and excretory organs.
  • Alimentary canal is complete, mouth and anus lie at opposite ends of the body.
  • Respiration through general body surface, by gills, air tubes or book - lungs.
  • Circulatory system is open with dorsal heart, arteries and haemocoel (blood sinues) but without capillaries and veins. It means that blood does not flow  in well defined blood vessels.
  • True nephridia absent.
