In every language and every area there are different names for houses. In telugu we call house as ILLU. This means a house. There are many other names for ILLU in telugu basing on their size and quality.' Bhavanam' means a very big house. 'Hut' indicates a small house with tadi leaves. 'Shed' means a house with sheets as roof. 'MEEDA' means a house with multiple floors. It may be a duplex or normal multistoried building also. 'Penkutillu' means house with tiles on roof. 'Daba' means house with cement slab roof without rooms in the first floor. There is no separate telugu name for Flat in Telugu
As you have said that the words corresponding to "house" used in South Indian languages vary. 'Manai', 'Illam', 'Veedu', are some of them. However, in Kerala the generally used term is Veedu. But Nambudiri community use Illam or Mana. These are cited as a reason to believe that this community had come from Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu.
