In solar cells silicon metal is used.
But silicon is in the doped form
Doping is a process when a certain impurity is added to metals to change its electric property
Two type of doped silicon is used. One doped with boron that is positively charged and other with arsenic that is negatively charged
When light falls on the cell then these two sides act as positive and negitive terminal of battery producing current

The metalloid used in solar cell is silicon because of its special chemical properties.
When silicon is adulterated with impurities such as arsenic and gallium, its ability to capture more solar energy than when it is used alone is enhanced to a considerable extent. This is because in pure crystalline silicon its electrons are not capable of moving about freely. An atom of arsenic and an atom of gallium have one electron more and less respectively than one atom of silicon.
