Polyploidy can be induced by an alkaline chemical called cholchicine. It was first prepared by blakeslee.Colchicine inhibits spindle formation and at the same time it doesn't interfere with duplication of chromosome.

Other chemicals like

Acenaphthene

sulfanilamide

Chloral hydrate

Can also induce polyploidy.

The chemical used for the induction of polyploidy in plants is colchicine.

Explanation:

  • Polyploidy is the condition in which the cells have more than two sets of chromosomes.
  • Polyploidy is common in plants than in animals. This condition arises in total non-disjunction of 'chromosomes during mitosis' and meiosis.
  • Polyploidy is either induced by chemicals or induced naturally. Colchicine is a commonly used chemical to induce polyploidy in plants.
  • They are mitotic inhibitors which prevent the formation of microtubule.
  • Thus it inhibits chromosomal segregation during the cell division. It results in an improve number of chromosome sets in the daughter cells.
