Desertification is the process in which fertile land is changed to a desert area (large dry mass of land) due to several reasons. Overgrazing, urbanization, climatic changes, natural disaster, deforestation, etc are responsible for this.  

Desertification caused due to human activity is urbanization.  

Man for his own selfish needs cuts down the trees to make houses, buildings, factories and other amenities for his well being. Slowly the land gets leached; the soil loses its mineral value and becomes dry.  

With time, the soil dries up and it can no more be used for agricultural purposes.
