An indigenous variety of bee used for commercial production of honey is the Indian Hive Bee which is also known as Apis cerana indica which is its scientific name.

These domestic bees create several parallel beehives.

They produce around 8 kgs of honey per colony every year.

Native to India, or largely Asia, they tend to swarm and abscond.

They are larger in size compared to Apis florae but considerably smaller than Apis mellifera.
