There are a variety of sheeps found and reared in India. Some breeds of sheep are used for wool while some give a steady supply of meat.

Mecheri is found in Samel, Erode, Karur, Namakkal and some parts of Dharmapuri districts of Tamil Nadu and is used for meat purposes.    

Chennai Red, used for meat is found in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai districts of Tamil Nadu.

Ramanadhapuram White is also used for meat and found in Ramanadhapuram, Shivgangai, and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu.

Keezhakaraisal is also a meat purpose sheep found in Ramanadhapuram, Shivgangai, and Thirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. Neelagiri is found in the Neelagiri districts of Tamil Nadu and produces wool.

Trichy Black is found in Trichy, Perambalur, Dharmapuri and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu producing black wool. Coimbatore, like its name suggests is distributed in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu producing wool.

Deccani is found in Bombay Deccan region and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh region producing coloured fleece, mostly black and gray.

Nellore, the tallest sheep breed in India producing wool is found in Nellore, Prakasam and Ongole districts of Tamil Nadu.

Mandya is found in Karnataka and produces a coarse type of wool. Marwari yields a coarse, hardy, carpet variety white wool of a mixed hairy composition. Gaddi sheeps are found in Jammu and yields a lustrous quality of wool.
