Some weaving communities in India are the tanti weavers of Bengal, julahas or momin weavers of north India, sale, kaikkolars and devangs of south India.

  • Weaver usually belonged to communities which specialised in weaving. Their skills and talents passed on from one generation to the other generation.
  • In a majority of the weaving communities, the weaving tasks were done by men. For 'colored textiles', the thread was 'dyed by the dyer', referred to as rangrez.
  • In case of 'printed cloth', the weavers required the assistance of special block printers called chhipigars. Handloom weaving and the works related to it gave livelihood for billions of Indians
