Democracy is a system of government where the supreme power is bestowed in the people and is exercised by the people directly or indirectly through an established system of representatives who are usually elected into office periodically.

Therefore, these are some of the important ideas in a democratic government:

1.  The people/citizens of the country play an important role in appropriate functioning of the democratic government. This includes decision making, election and assigning of responsibilities.

2. People elect their leaders/representatives who act on the interest of the people. The representatives make decisions on behalf of the people. 

3. People are given the freedom to express their views through strikes, rallies and referendum. This happens when they feel they are oppressed, persecuted or marginalized.

4.   Active citizenship is encouraged to ensure that the government doesn't sleep on the job by being unresponsive and unaccountable.
