NEW DELHI: The plastic bag is well-entrenched partly because people find it convenient to use it. That helps the government get away with its non-committal stand on the issue when cities around the globe are banning it. But many citizens have been adopting initiatives to discourage the use of polythene bags.
Conserve, a non-profit organisation run by Anita Ahuja, has been actively transforming the polythene menace into designer fashion accessories and exporting them. Started in 2002, Conserve has about 300 ragpickers who supply it with 100 kg of plastic bags daily, which are then converted to about 4,000 designer bags a month, other than a host of bags, footwear and jewellery. "The bags that are brought to us are washed, sterilised and treated to make a much stronger and thicker plastic. Then we fashion them into accessories and market the products," said Anita
