Gold electroplating also provides superior corrosion and tarnish protection, although it is more expensive than other plating processes.

Reasons for which object/appliance are electroplated :

$\square$ To Improve/alter their appearance : We all have seen shining handles of bicycles and bath taps which are otherwise made of iron. This is done by electroplating them with chromium or Nickel.

$\square$ To provide Protective/Strengthening coating : The chromium deposits not only provides a shiny appearance but also helps to avoid corrosion and effects of "Wear and Tear"

$\square$To Minimise Cost : Some Metals like Gold,Silver,Platinum, Nickel are very expensive. So the object is made of less expensive metal and only a thin coating of expensive material is deposited over it.
