No presently known plant species could survive the conditions on Mars unprotected. This is because Mars’ atmosphere is so thin that water boils at its melting point. The only liquid water on Mars is heavily laden with salts which keep it liquid at temperatures of 26F, and is present for only part of the year.

The soil has no real organic matter in it at all. Mars has little nitrogen or oxygen to speak of- the atmosphere is mainly carbon dioxide, instead.

A plant would freeze solid and die - if it ever thawed, it would boil.
