Substances like camphor, candles, etc., burn with flame while substances like coal do not produce flame on burning. Substances when burn produce heat and light. Some of them also produce flame with light. The substances which vaporize during burning produces flame.

Charcoal is a substance that does not produce flame on burning.

  • There are two types of substances- combustible and incombustible. Combustible substances are the ones that can burn in air to produce heat and light whereas incombustible substances do not catch fire.
  • Further, there are two types of combustible substances. Firstly, there are substances like camphor, wood, alcohol, etc that produce a flame along with producing heat and light to burn in air.
  • On the other hand there are substances like charcoal that does not vaporizes on heating and thus does not produce a flame. It only glows  when burnt and produces heat and light while glowing.
