Fishes have developed various adaptations to assist them in moving comfortably through water. The most important being the presence of a streamlined body which provides least resistance while swimming, followed by modification of the limbs to form fins, which help in controlling the direction and velocity of swimming.

The ability to breathe underwater comes from the use of gills. Gills are specialized organs which are able to extract oxygen required for respiration from water. All organisms belonging to the class Pisces, show the presence of gills.
