IUPAC naming for toluene is methyl benzene. It can be prepared from the straight chain alkanes, when they are heated in the presence of and at around 500-600°C. This results in the cyclization followed by dehydrogenation. the reaction results in the aromatization of alkanes.
Over 50% of the methylbenzene (toluene) produced in the refinery is converted into benzene by dealkylation and disproportionation. Methylbenzene is also used to make TDI (toluene diisocyanate or methylbenzene diisocyanate), one of the reagents used to make polyurethanes.
