Magnesium oxide is an ionic compound with the chemical formula MgO. Thus the ions which constitute one unit of magnesium oxide are:-
1)Cation-magnesium ion
2)Anion-oxide ion

Hi friends,

Cations are known as the positive ions in an element or a compound whereas anions are are negative in nature. Usually these positive and negative ions combine with other opposite charge ions to form elements and compounds.   In magnesium oxide, the chemical formula of which is MgO, consist of following composition;

Cation(+ive ion) = (Mg+) Magnesium ion

Anion (-ive ion) = (0-) Oxide ion

I hope the above answer is helpful.

Thanks.
