A separation funnel can be used to separate a mixture of mustard oil and water.
In a separation funnel, the liquid with more density (in this case water) settles at the bottom while the liquid with lesser density (mustard oil) is at the top.

The Apparatus That Can Be Used To Separate A Mixture Of Mustard Oil And Water is a Separatory funnel

WORKING OF SEPARATORY FUNNEL-

  • A separatory funnel also known as a sep funnel or separation funnel is glassware used to separate the components of a (liquid-liquid) mixture into two immiscible liquids phases of different densities.
  • When the funnel is kept still after agitation the liquid with high density settles at the bottom and liquid with low density will stay above.
  • The apparatus is conical in shape with a hemispherical end.
  • It has a stopper and a stopcock at the top and bottom respectively.
  • The bottom outlet is designed to drain liquid out of the funnel.
  • The mixture that has to be separated is poured through the top outlet with the stopcock at the bottom closed.
  • The funnel is closed and shaken gently multiple times
  • The funnel is inverted and to release excess vapor pressure stopcock is opened.
  • for the phases of the liquids to separate, the funnel is kept aside for some time.
  • The bottom tap and bottom stopcock are opened slowly to allow the liquid present in the bottom layer to be released by gravitation.
  • After the removal of the bottom layer, the stopcock is closed and the liquid left is poured out through the top into another container.
