The bacteria that can survive without oxygen are called anaerobes or anaerobic bacteria. Bacteria such as Clostridium, Bacteroides and methanogens (methane producing archae bacteria) live in complete absence of oxygen because their energy generating pathways are not coupled with consumption of oxygen.
