The balloon like structures inside the lungs are called alveoli. The functions of alveoli are:
- Alveoli are air sacs present inside our lungs. This is where the exchange of gas takes place inside the lungs. The ends of the alveoli are attached to tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
- The oxygen from the blood is diffused into the blood and the carbon dioxide from the blood is diffused in the alveoli. This carbon dioxide is then taken to the lungs and exhaled out.
- Alveoli are important as they help oxygen to reach the blood. This oxygen is then sent to the rest of the body wherever it is needed.
- The walls of alveoli are very thin which makes the process of exchange of gas easy and efficient.
- The number of alveoli differs from person to person. It also depends on the age, gender and diseases.
