At the end of the respiratory tree, sits balloon like air sacs known as the alveoli (Also known as pulmonary alveolus).

Structure of the alveoli:

The bronchioles branch out in the lung to form these balloon like air sacs.

The alveoli are one cell thick and are arranged in clusters all throughout the lung.  This thin membrane of the alveoli allow for easy passage of gases in and out of the alveoli.

The alveoli are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries that aid its function of gaseous exchange.

Functions of the alveoli:

The main function of the alveoli is exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the blood stream.

The oxygen is taken into the blood stream from the alveoli while carbon (iv) oxide is taken from the blood stream into the alveoli.

The alveoli then, through the help of the action of respiratory muscles, expels the CO₂ gas from the lungs.
