Hi,The By-products are alcohol (C H3CH2OH)and sodium salt of carboxylic acid called sodium ethanoate or commonly called sodium acetate (CH3COONa)To separate this by-product, Esther is reacted with sodium hydroxide.ie, CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH -----> C2H5OH + CH3COONa
(ester) (alcohol) (sodium acetate)
( P.S: This reaction is called saponification because it is used in the preparation of soap)
hope this helps! :)
