The most commonly used chemical in the fire extinguisher is Sodium Bicarbonate. Upon heating,it gives carbon dioxide. This forms as a blanket and cuts the supply of oxygen thus reducing fire. Now a days Potassium Bicarbonate is used as it is two times effective than the latter.

Answer:

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used in making fire extinguishers. It is used because it is an incombustible gas and it is heavier than air. So it does not easily rise up and extinguish the fire. Thus carbon dioxide is used.
