kala azar is also known as visceral leishmaniasis.
kala azar is caused by bites from female phlebotomine sandflies- the vector of the leishmania parasite.
it is caused by protozoa parasites of genus leishmania.
the parasite migrates to liver, spleen and bone marrow.
