the neuron lie end to end in a chain to transmit the impulse in an animal body. the neuron are not connected. there occurs a very microscopic gap between terminal portion of axon of one neuron and dendrite of another neuron. this gap is called synapse. at the end of axon the Electric impulse set of the release of some Chemicals called neurotransmitter. these Chemicals cross the gap and start a similar Electric impulse in a dendrite of next neuron. sinapse actually act like a one way valve. this is because chemical substance present at only one side of gap. In this way, synapse ensure that nerve impulse travel only in one direction.
