Answer :

When a mixture of iron filling and sulfur is heated then the iron sulfide is formed.

The balanced chemical reaction will be,

Fe+S\overset{\Delta}\rightarrow FeS

Thus, the compound formed on heating a mixture of iron filling and sulfur is, iron sulfide.

If the dilute HCl is added to iron sulfide compound then hydrogen sulfide gas is evolved.

The balanced chemical reaction will be,

FeS(s)+HCl(l)\rightarrow FeCl_2(aq)+H_2S(g)

Thus, the gas evolved in this reaction is, hydrogen sulfide.

The properties of hydrogen sulfide are :

  1. It is a foul smelling gas which resembles an odour of rotten eggs.
  2. It is a colorless, poisonous and a flammable gas.
