In this demonstration experiment, ironwool is heated in the presence ofchlorine gas and the vapours of bromine and iodine. Exothermic redox reactionsoccur, causing the iron wool to glow.Iron(III) halides (FeX3) are formed as coloured solids.

The iron reactsvigorously with the chlorine to form a cloud of iron(III) chloride. After several minutes theiron(III) chloride formed by the reactionsettles to the bottom of the flask.
