Nucleic acids are also digested in the small intestine. A few enzymes called nucleases work together as the other enzymes work together in order to break down proteins. RNA and DNA are hydrolyzed into their component nucleotides. At the brush border nucleotidases breaks the nucleotides into nucleosides. Then the nucleosides are broken into nitrogenous bases, sugars and phosphates by enzymes called nucleosidases.
